What Next?

So, you have signed up to play with the Moggill Cricket Club or you are seriously thinking about it - what happens next?

If you are In2Cricket (aged Grade 1 to 8 year olds) you will start playing on Friday nights, commencing on Friday 15th October 2010.  Sessions last for one and a quarter hours (5.30-6.45pm) and are always held on the playing fields in front of the Bellbowrie Sports and Recreation Clubhouse in Sugarwood Street. This year the season will last 8 weeks & finish on the 3rd December 2010. Depending on the numbers and enthusiasm, the program may also run after the January school holidays. The emphasis is on having fun and learning the basic skills of cricket.  Children (boys and girls are both welcome) play with plastic bats and balls to minimise the chances of injury and all players receive a shirt, bat, ball, cap and water bottle etc  Parental participation is actively encouraged but it is not compulsory).

We had over 40 children participating in the In2Cricket program last year and with the involvement of a cheerful band of 10-12 helpers the ratio of players to adult coaches/supervisors was about 5 to 1. Super 8's is part of the In2Cricket program and children should attend In2Cricket at the start of the season and the games between clubs for the older children generally start a couple of weeks after the Junior season commences.

If you are a junior player (ages Under 10 through Under 16/17) your season commences on Saturday 9th October 2010.  Games are played on a "home and away" basis against clubs in South West zone. Clubs in South West include Kenmore, Centenary, Macgregor, Gregory Terrace, St Laurences, Souths, Park Ridge, University and Wests.  The furthest you would expect to have to travel to play would probably be Park Ridge - about 45 minutes away.

Under 10 games are played as one day games, 30 overs a team on a shortened pitch using a softer ball.

Under 11 through Under 16/17 games are played over two days on consecutive Saturdays and the number of overs per side and size and weight of the ball increase progressively through the age groups. For all age groups, games start at 8.15am & finish at 11.45am although some afternoon games may be scheduled in the older age groups, particularly in the early part of the season.

We usually get enough players for at least one team per each age group, but anticipate the club will field more than one under 10,11,12, 13,14 &16 sides.   Teams are graded into Divisions by the South West Zone Committee based upon performances in the previous year.  This ensures that as near as possible, our teams are graded to play against teams of equal ability from the other clubs.  This becomes important as some of the bigger clubs can have 4-5 teams per age group and Division 1 can be highly competitive in the older age groups.

All junior teams train one afternoon per week on a day  dependent upon the availability of the individual coach at the Bellbowrie Sports and Rec Grounds or Pullenvale State School usually between 4:30 and 6:00pm.

The pre-Christmas season concludes on Saturday 4th December 2010 and then it all starts again post-Christmas for another eight weeks on Saturday 29th January 2010.

Coaches, managers, scorers and general helpers/supporters are always welcome,  so if you have some experience, love cricket or would just like to be involved, ask the coach - he or she will be only too happy to talk to you!

Line and Length - Welcome to another season of cricket.

But it’s only August I hear you cry.

Well, cricket doesn’t actually start until October, but the sign on will be held at the Bellbowrie Sports and Recreation Club on Saturday August 14 from 8.30-4.00pm.

Why so soon?

Simple, really.  Before each season starts we have to work out how many players we have in each age group and how many teams we can then nominate for the Metropolitan South West junior competition.  We then have to set time aside each weekend to grade players, not just to see which teams they play in, but also in which division we nominate the teams.
We then have to rope and hog tie unsuspecting parents and refuse to release them until they agree to coach/manage/score for each team. Just kidding, it’s only the coaches we tie up – the others we blackmail.

Anyway, before you know it the weekends are ticking away, then the school holidays begin, then the kids go back to school, cricket starts and all is right with the world.

There is one major change this year and that is our wonderful In2Cricket coaches Jeff and Nancy would like to hold the sessions on Friday evenings from 5.30-6.45pm. This means the children will not have to play in the heat of a Saturday morning and will also allow a third coach to join the program. Our In2Cricket program is one of the most successful around in terms of quality, which is why for a small club we punch well above our weight. Last year we entered nine teams in the pre-Christmas competition, two of those won Premierships and two more – the Under 10As and the Under 11s – were undefeated. (They don’t play for Premierships at that age).

So what’s next?

Simply come along on August 14, fill out a registration form and hand it in to one of the charming and exceptionally good looking committee members. Or you can fill out a form online at www.moggillcricketclub.org.au print it out and drop it in to us or mail it in. For legal reasons, we need to have a form with your physical signature on it, rather than an online form. I know, I know, *!**!^& lawyers, but what can you do?!

The aforementioned committee members will also be there to answer any cricket-related questions, including who should open the bowling for the first Ashes test, and why your esteemed club president was overlooked for selection for the 1989 tour of the West Indies.

If you have any other questions, please drop me an email or give me a call. Please forward this email to anyone who you think may be interested, or failing that anyone you don’t like.

Please accept my apologies if you have left the club. We are using an old list that will be updated after sign on.

President's Report

It gives me great pleasure to present my first President's Report for the Moggill Cricket Club for season 2008-09.

I would firstly like to thank the outgoing president, Ian Bartholomew, for all the work he has done for the Moggill Cricket Club during his time as a committee member and as president. Ian has been a great source of help and advice for me during my first year as president and he continues to work tirelessly for the club in many capacities. I thank Ian particularly for the countless hours he has put in preparing and maintaining the turf wicket and for his role representing the club at sub-districts level.

I would also like to thank the treasurer, David Wilson, the secretary, Mike Milliner, and committee members Michael Jarrett and Nancy Phillips. No club can survive without the support of its volunteers and the Moggill Cricket Club is fortunate to have such high-calibre people on its committee.

Moggill Cricket Club began the 2008-09 season with 11 teams, consisting of two under 10s, two under 11s, two under 12s, one under 13, two under 14s, one under 15 and one under 16, as well as about 30 children in the Have A Go program. There were also two teams in the Brisbane sub-district competition, one in C3 Grade and one in A4 Grade.

The results from such a small club compared with others in the zone were outstanding. The under 16 team won the pre-Christmas premiership while several others finished either second or third in very close competitions. Ten players were chosen for zone representative honours at either state championship, state development or school level.

Our two senior teams created a small piece of history for Moggill Cricket Club with both winning their respective premierships. This was a great achievement, with these clubs continuing to provide an avenue for local players to continue their cricket after leaving the junior ranks. I would like to congratulate Paddy Behan for organising the A grade team and Dave Barry the C grade team in 2008-09.

The increased number of teams at the club continues to put pressure on our grounds. This pressure is increased even further by the increased length of the soccer season and the use of the grounds by soccer from early January onwards. The population of the Moggill-Bellbowrie-Pullenvale area continues to grow, yet the Brisbane City Council has provided no new playing facilities since the 1970s. The percentage of people under 17 in this area is 32 percent, 10 percent higher than the Brisbane average, so the problem of too many people trying to use too few sporting facilities will get worse, not better.

While Brisbane City Council has acquired land in Moggill to earmark for new ovals, Councillor Margaret De Witt has indicated to me that this development will not go ahead for at least three to four years. A proposed new oval on the site of the old pineapple farms has been put on hold by Mirvac until they decide to develop that stage.

I would like to once again thank the old committee for their help and support this year and look forward to another successful year.

Andrew Dent

President.
